Project Sleepipe: Conversion of the Remaining Pipes
Sleepipe is an upcycling project for 6 concrete pipes that remained unused during the drainage project Seapipe 2.0 in Zug. One of the concrete pipes had been already converted in 2019 into a single-bed hotel room, fully equipped with a table, a bed couch, generous wardrobe and shelf space, a refrigerator, a shower, a toilet and even underfloor heating. In March 2020, the conversion work began to turn the other remaining five concrete pipes into Sleepipes.
The conversion work began by building out the floor in all five pipes to create the basis for the rest of the extension. Shortly afterwards, windows and doors were installed. For two days, a team from Biberbau AG devoted themselves entirely to our Sleepipes - and the results were impressive. The back of the Sleepipes, where the bathroom will be built in a further step, was fitted with a back wall and a large, semi-circular window. At the front of the five tubes, an entrance door and two windows were added. This was planned so it keeps the inside of the tubes as bright as possible. To ensure the privacy of the guests, blinds and privacy window films will be installed later on.
In mid-April, the 25-tonne concrete pipes were loaded and transported to the Brändle carpentry site in Zug. At this site and over the past few months, the pipes were fitted with custom-made furniture - a special challenge due to the small surface area and the curved walls. During the summer months, the basic framework of all cabinet surfaces was installed, and parts of the sanitary equipment was installed. The installation of the lighting system of the Sleepipes had also been started. The Sleepipes should be completed by the end of 2020.
